I got stuck on this book, which has never happened to me before... Some encouragement got me back on track and I am so happy I did.
This book is like nothing I have read before. The ambiance was very special (loved it) and it had so many facets that I believe I will love it even more when I reread it.
I loved that the author did not lead me, over explained or passed judgment but left it to me, as a reader to make up my own mind. Highly appreciate that.
The book jumped some back and forth in time which makes it wise to pay attention to the dates.

Most of the framework from canon can be recognised and the twists and turns that where made to modernise it was brilliant and plausible.

The opening scene was sheer genius as Darcy espies Elizabeth, swimming in a pond. He never makes himself known though and they meet a couple of months later where he insults her.
Darcy fights his attraction and come off, not only as distant and aloof but really arrogant. The fact that he is there to offer to buy Longbourne is not making him more palatable to Elizabeth... Darcy's interference with Bingley and Jane was kind of adorable despite the fact that he was utterly wrong.

The turning point in her esteem comes when he saves Jane and the relationship is developing nicely when Elizabeth's long lost love returns. That is where I got stuck... Heart-wrenching as it was, I am so glad I got back on track.

Darcy is dealing extremely poorly with the revelation and hurts Elizabeth in a most shocking scene. Hated it and loved it equally.
Elizabeth falters a bit too but her solution I adored. Choosing herself...

The anguish Darcy experience when he realises what his done was beautifully written and the road to HEA was saucy and passionate.

Charlotte's story really tugged on my heart strings. Collins was a piece of work and her true love surprising. The Lucas family had a lot of skeletons in their closets.

The Georgiana/Wickham debacle had an interesting twist to it and so did Lydia/Wickham.
Caroline crawled under my skin as a parasite but there is a sad reason behind her behaviour which orders her some leniency.

Richard was a major character as a war hero with a lot of ghosts in both his past and his presence.

I absolutely adore this book.

I teach teenagers so I couldn't help saying that this book indeed gave me all the feels possible! I stumbled upon this title on a "best of" list and I love those rare P&P stories that are in an alternate time period. And there were maybe 2 grammatical errors TOTAL in the entire 300 pages. That's quite a feat in this genre!

This story...wow. It was certainly ambitious but it had everything. It's easy to conceive a post WWII America that is glamorous and ready to move on from the war. However, this author brought to the forefront issues plaguing our nation at the time, from racism to homophobia. And the author did this while seamlessly weaving in the Pride and Prejudice story we know and love. The author also does a great job of pretty much fleshing out all the characters without being tiresome. Some stories go on and on but in this story it worked. I even enjoyed those rare glimpses in the future for some of the characters which show us that there are long lasting consequences for some of our actions (in this case the glimpses were for Charlotte's brother and Richard Fitzwilliam).

Halfway through the book I was ready for perhaps the infamous proposal which was not quite a proposal but an oh so spicy confrontation nonetheless. But none of that prepared me for the "other man" in Elizabeth's life, who happens to be Richard....yes, THAT Richard! And this may be hard to swallow...but unlike other stories where Lizzy and Richard take it as far as an engagement, this Lizzy and Richard take it all the way to the bedroom. Now you see why I got all the feels in this book?

This story made me run the gamut of emotions happiness, sadness, anger, confusion, frustration....and well those racy scenes....ooof! Hot! Haha definitely rated R in my opinion but not overly explicit like other stories.

This Darcy, while seemingly suffering for most of the story (I mean...his cousin slept with the woman he loves and he almost loses her to him again!) is the kind of Darcy I love. In the words of Elizabeth, he is a "beast," and that is in the most glowing terms.

My final random comment is about Collins. I found what this author did with him and making him an abusive husband interesting and rather intense. But I also agree with the author that what we see as horrific was probably perfectly normal for him, especially considering his wife's illicit affair with Anne. He is an unfortunate product of his times and where he comes from.

I am so glad I stumbled upon this title and will gladly add it to my favorites! I may even just buy the paperback as well! Looking forward to more from this author.
This was quite an intriguing novel that touched on many issues dealing with romance, sorrow, trials, tribulations and social matters involving the characters in the novel. It is well written covering these issues and were well in content with some of the issues Jane Austen dealt with in Pride and Prejudice. Some issues were the same as when Darcy and Elizabeth jumped to the wrong conclusions of each other in both novels. They had to work these conflicts out before they understood one another.
I liked the fact that this novel was set in the United States and at a time when events were going on as the social issues of Gay lesbian rights weren't heard of and was brought up in this novel. Elizabeth did stand up for her friend as she always did for those she loved.
The author chose the state of South Carolina for this novel and was pretty accurate with the cities involved that were located there and incorporated some from Jane Austen's novel as well.
It would have been nice to mention the horse farms o Aiken as some of the Kentucky Derby winners hailed from that city. Also it would have been nice to mention the Augusta National and the golf that is know the world over and Bobby Jones. Just a thought.
I loved the novel as things turned out for the best for all involved even Wickham and Lydia. However, Carolyn and Mr. Collins were trouble but somehow Mr. Collins disappeared and Carolyn did her share of trouble making to make the novel interesting.
I did find I loved the twist and turn with Richard Fitzwilliam in the plot involving romance and the locket involvement.
I look forward to more from this first time author of a P & P variation.
