Agatha Christie wrote By The Pricking of My Thumbs in 1968. The title is taken from a line in Shakespeare's tragic play Macbeth. The novel is the last one featuring the married couple team of Tommy and Tuppence Beresford. The couple are in four earlier works by Christie. They are now in semi-retirement.
The Plot: The clever story deals with a painting of a house by a lock given to Tommy's Aunt Ada. The aunt is a resident of the Sunny Ridge Nursing Home. She dies three weeks after Tommy and Tuppence visit her. During their visit they meet residents who complain of their treatment at the nursing home,. One woman even fears she may be poisoned. Tuppence is intrigued by a picture in her aunt's room showing a house in a village which she decides to investigate. She remembers the house she had seen on a previous train journey. Upon arrival she interviews several villagers about a series of child murders from years ago and learns about the residents of the community. She also wants to know what happened to Mrs. Lawrence an old lady at Sunny Ridge who has disappeared. Meanwhile back in London, Tommy begins to fear that something bad has happened to Tuppence whom he has not heard of for several days. He repairs to the village to check on her whereabouts. The couple discover dark and evil secrets that lead the reader to flip the pages.
This is a very good Tommy and Tuppence adventure. Though she was in the twilight of her writing career Agatha Christie has provided a good escapist read for her legion of fans. Worth reading!

I am a BIG fan of Agatha Christie and am never disappointed in her tales. I enjoy the books and so far have not tried to figure out 'who dun it.' I love to read and I like mysteries, cozy or really intricate or involved.
Agatha Christie is always a pleasant read. I read all of her books many years ago and now find that I enjoy rereading. Tommy and Tuppence are a young Marie's couple in the detective business. They are my second favorite Christie characters after Miss Marple.
Moved along but ended in a ridiculous climax.
I thought I was a true Christie fan, but had never read Tommy and Tuppence. How have I missed these? Thoroughly enjoyed this one and now will go back and read the rest. A nice switch from Poirot and Marple, but just as much typically great Christie.
By the Pricking of My Thumbs (1968) marks the penultimate appearance of Tommy and Tuppence Beresford. It is one of the novels which I return to periodically because I find that the novel continues to provide a certain amount of entertainment.

In By the Pricking of My Thumbs, we have less the espionage element that might have characterized their earlier adventures, The Secret Adversary, N or M?, or even possibly Partners in Crime. Instead, this novel represents a novel later in Christie's career in which she began to explore alternative reasons for murder. I am reminded of the sort of ingenuity that Christie utilizes in a late Miss Marple Mystery, Nemesis, written around this same period.

The reader should be aware that this even-paced thriller belongs to the brand of mystery in which the reader will have to sit back and enjoy Tuppence's wanderings with only a mysterious painting as an initial clue. The couple is older and their concerns focus little on employment but on the reasons why a woman has disappeared from a nursing home.

I recommend By the Pricking of Thumbs to people who are looking for something a little different from the genre which ordinarily belongs to Miss Marple and Hercule Poirot. While By the Pricking of My Thumbs is not as odd as Endless Night, I would place this work among her works which emphasize subtle yet insistent menace, drawing on the ordinary as a means of hiding past crimes.
Fascinating read. Quite different from Miss Marple and Poirot, in a way that the detectives are a husband and wife team. Tuppence is completely like Miss Marple and Poirot, listening to her instinct and would not stop investigating until she is satisfied. Tommy is always there to be the sounding board for Tuppence. Thoroughly enjoyed it. The story is different from Agatha Christie's other stories. It has some kind of a haunting aspect of it.... I like it very much.
"By the Pricking of My Thumbs" by Agatha Christie is a pure joy to read, it's marvelously devious narrative is immersive, the richly developed characters quirky and original, and the atmospheric backdrops place you in the community where the story takes place. It's no wonder that Agatha Christie's stories have sold over 2 billion copies. This is the first Tommy and Tuppence series book I have read and it not only met but exceeded my lofty expectations, it's brilliant. For lovers of mystery this is a must read so pull up a chair, get comfortable, and prepare yourself for a pure unadulterated reading experience...5 stars!!!!!
