Flotsam was my first introduction to David Wiesner, when I read this book as part of a mock Caldecott unit for the 2007 Caldecott Medal (my second graders overwhelmingly thought this to be the best illustrated book of the year), and I’ve been a huge Wiesner fan ever since! He manages to weave together a story beautifully and wordlessly told through illustrations. Illustrated in watercolor, the realistic photos draw children and adults in immediately. Each page evokes the colors and emotions of the seashore and ocean as the story connects children not only across the ocean but also across generations. Winner of numerous awards including the Caldecott Medal, a New York Times Best Illustrated Children’s Book Award, and a Kirkus Reviews Best Children’s Book of 2006, readers of all ages will want to read this again and again!

Flotsam David Wiesner 9780618194575 Books Reviews

It is a beautiful book. It’s an imaginative structure and reeling of the story. I own many art books, love Rizzoli and Tachen, but this book was not as magical as I expected from the reviews and awards. It’s an unpopular opinion, clearly, but that’s art I suppose. I’d advise checking it out at a local library first.
Beautiful artwork that explains the story without words. Not sure my 7 year old granddaughter was all that pleased having to apply her imagination, however. Maybe she's still too young or maybe other books and media haven't helped to develop her imagination. Regardless, I would recommend this book.
This will be a Christmas present for a 3-year old who is at his happiest when he is lying on his belly and examining sea creatures in tidal pools. This book, about just such a boy, seems like a perfect match. The pictures are fanciful and play with the concepts of time and space. Since there are no words, the adult "reader" and child can add as much or as little as they wish. There are always new bits of the pictures to notice. The 3-year-old loves "Mr. Wuffles" by the same author, and if this new book is read nearly as often, the book will be a very good investment.
This wordless book is an enchanting and imaginative journey. As a fellow author/illustrator, this book caught my eye immediately. I couldn’t put it down! The illustrations are just beautiful and the story flows easily without the need for words. However, there is plenty of room for discussion.
I had never heard of this author until my grandson received the book earlier this year. I was astonished by the quality of the pictures, and enjoying the story until we turned the page to look at the photographs from the camera! Then my mind was blown! This book is astonishing. The imaginative details captivated me and my grandson. No words, great art. A real winner. On a side note, LOL, I had to explain "film" and the one-hour developing store.
I bought this for myself, not a child. I love Wiesner's story-telling art.
My Dad spoke about the Flotsom he would find in Atlantic city. Flotsom is debris that is washed up on the shore or floats in the ocean. Dad would find things he could put into a small box to share with his friends and family. I always thought that the word Flotsom was his make up word, until I read this book to our friend's kids. Flotsom is a fascinating photographic tale, of a boy who finds an unexpected treasure at the shore. The treasure, lures him in a world of the unknown through photography, documenting the past, present, and future. You would have to believe the magic of this book, and trust that all things are possible through the eyes of the beholder.
